VCE/VCAL Programs

Program Year 11 Year 12
Biology

(2 hour)

Unit 1 –  Biomimicry

Survival requires control and regulation of factors of an individual in repose to their environment. In this program, students will investigate the survival of an individual/species by conducting an experiment in Defensive Swarms.

Unit 4 – DNA Manipulation

Students investigate and analyse techniques to manipulate DNA, using restriction enzymes and gel electrophoresis techniques to sort DNA fragments.

 

Chemistry

(2 hour)

Unit 2 –  Water

Students analyse a range of organic salts/compounds in water, using various techniques such as spectroscopy, AAS and HPLC.

Unit 4 – Organic Compounds

Location of this program is at Swinburne Hawthorn

Students investigate organic compounds using a range of instrumental analysis: Infrared (IR) spectroscopy, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Mass spectroscopy and HPLC.

Physics

(2 hour)

Unit 1 – Thermodynamics

Students apply thermodynamic principles to investigate The use of thermal imaging and infrared thermography in locating heating losses in building and/or system malfunctions; cost saving implications.

Psychology

(2 hour)

Unit 2 – Olfactory Perception

Students apply principles of perception in analysing ice-cream flavour made with liquid nitrogen and the social perception of alternative foods (insects) into our diet.

Unit 4 –  Sleep

In conjunction with the Epworth Sleep Lab

Students undertake a comprehensive sleep education session and explore altered states of consciousness using data-logging and VR equipment.
